South Pacific - Cliff Top Beach House
Culburra Beach
The brief was to create a relaxed contemporary beach style dwelling on the plateau part of the property that disappears over a cliff face and meets the Pacific Ocean.
The site is located with a northern orientation with views across the beach, extending to Crookhaven Heads and beyond Coolangatta mountain and to Black Head at Gerroa.
The building was intended not to feel too 'heavy' and as such predominantly light weight external.
In addition to a north facing verandah accessed via the main living space of the building, the owners wished to create an additional outdoor area that would be protected regardless of the wind direction, yet still encapsulate the spectacular northern views. This was achieved by designing an internal courtyard which opens up from the main living area with bi-fold doors. From the street the front terrace and roof which extends partly over the courtyard gives the appearance of a front entrance door. Visitors are pleasantly surprised when they enter into an external space that reveals the stunning views through the building.
The owners of the building payed homage to the original cottage that was demolished for the new dwelling, by reusing the name and signage of the original building "South Pacific".
We wanted a real 'beach' house - not just a house by the beach.
Client Testimonial
Todd Slaughter and the crew at Nest Residential totally understood this and were key to turning our ideas into reality. From initial brief, providing design options, patiently coping with our changes of mind, working hard to keep us within budget, right through to efficiently dealing with council and then, not the easiest of builders - they delivered! And in good time!
We now have a terrific beach house that we are really proud of and it continues to amaze all who visit.
Cannot thank Todd and Nest Residential enough.
